Croak

What is it?

Croak is a feature-rich soundboard app for iPad and iPhone. As someone who frequently GMs roleplaying sessions, I was disappointed by the lack of affordable soundboards for the iPad, and this motivated me to create Croak. But to be honest, I didn’t write the code, I left that to Claude Code - entirely.

So, what can you do with it? Here’s a list of features:

  • Organize sounds into projects and boards, customize their grid size and appearance
  • Import audio from files or from your Music library
  • Adapt volume, panning, looping, fades, playback rate and random silence intervals per button.
  • Trim clips with start and stop marks, without touching the source file.
  • Let one button control others: stop, pause, resume or fade whole groups, selected by tag.
  • Style buttons with colors, background images or cover art taken from the audio source.
  • Export and import boards and projects as archives, to back them up or move them to another device.

Not only is Croak available completely free of cost - everything runs on the device, you don’t need an account, there are no ads, no tracking, and nothing hidden behind a payment. If Croak is useful to you, I’d be delighted if you left me tip, there’s a tip jar in the app for that purpose.

Croak uses two open-source libraries:

  • Yams for reading and writing the YAML manifests inside export archives, and
  • ZIPFoundation for packing and unpacking those archives.
